The bite is on!!!!!!

by dave 5/29/2008 2:21:00 AM

All parties yesterday caught lots of walleyes.  We've been talking about weather and water temps since the opener and what we were saying is true.  With 3 days of stable warm weather, water temps got up to 57 degrees yesterday and the walleyes were on.  Most groups caught several limits of walleyes and just had a ball.  Lots of smiles last night when everyone got back in.  I had 3 boats also trout fish yesterday and the trout were also on, nice limits of quality lake trout.  For anybody coming to NW Ontario fishing this week you should hit one of the best weeks of the year.  We'll have to see if that prediction comes in.  Really the next few weeks should be great.  Got to go, everyone is ready to do it again today.

Almost there!!!

by dave 5/28/2008 9:03:00 AM
Pickerel lake yeilded some nice 20 plus inch walleyes today, other bush lakes are finaly warming up in temperature and so will the fishing.  Lac Seul's Broad and Sunlight have been excellent along with the wenasaga river system for walleyes.  Not a whole lot of news on big northerns.  Musky don't open until mid june.  Many area lakes are producing great smallmouth.  The water is in the low to mid 50's.  Excellent stringers of walleyes came in from the deer lake road area yesterday.  For those of you who know Baker lake, nice 20 plus black and gold 20 inchers were caught yesterday by Ray Smiths group.  Weather is great right now, 70 degrees and sunny with a pretty good chop.  Its just about the right time for Betty and I to sneek out, I'll let you know if that happens.

Snow???

by dave 5/26/2008 6:33:00 AM
May 26th and we woke up to 34 degree temperatures and snow showers, NE winds at 20 mph.  Fishing will be a challenge today.  Some will be playing alot of cards.  Fishing on Jackfish lake was good yesterday along with another local bush lake.  Some parties are doing very well, others just fair.  Kenny Highaugh and his family never have been here before and did very well on Pickerel Lake.  Many of our anglers are catching 19 to 22 inch walleyes.  With better weather coming in, and water temps finally in the low 50's fishing should really be getting good over the next few weeks.  Females are done spawning in most areas.  The feedback via emal has been great, keep the mail coming.  I enjoy talking to all of you.  Richard and Eric Gerths had another great day a little north of here yesterday, around 100 walleyes.

Walleyes!!!!!!!

by dave 5/23/2008 1:42:00 AM

Scooter Gerths and company in one boat and Bob Robinson with sons in tow, hammered the walleyes.  75 % of the males caught were still milking.  Fast running water was the key, I would think it sounds like the spawn is still on in that particular lake.  Both boats yielded well over 100 walleyes per boat. Nice catches guys.  Needless to say, both boats are heading back.  Everybody else in camp left today, with a full camp of fisherman arriving tommorow.  Water is still cold but each week sould be better for a while, at least until the water gets too warm.  Then we will be talking about fishishing even different lakes, but much the same presentation.  Normally we don't stray to far from a jig and minnow, but there are a few techniques that work and are fun for early summer fishing.

We are having to move around a bit to find active fish (different lakes).  Most large area walleyes lakes are too cold and slow.  Running water on any lake is for sure a fisrt choice.  We had good catches on two lakes that were dark in color and 2 degree warmer than most others.  50 degrees seem to be the key.  Surface temps are still averging below that right now.  Weather is still in the 50's and cloudy.  It is nice to be centrally located here at Pickerel Creek Camp, we are getting out and fishing alot of different water and are able to find a decent bite in a rough time.  Pickerel lake was slow yesturday with 15 walleyes per boat average down from 30 the day before.  Everybody is looking for warmer temps, air and water.  Keep the emails coming for lake specific reports and thanks for all the good feed back we have been getting on the new blog.

Getting better

by dave 5/20/2008 4:56:00 PM

The boats that caught only 10 walleyes on opening day caught 30 walleyes today.  The bite has been better everyday.  Bill Sorenson and I snuck out today and caught some really nice trout today on a small bush lake.  We had 6 trout between 24 and 26 inches.  White tube jigs with a sliver of sucker meat.  Water was still chilly, only 43 degrees on that lake.  Numbers of walleye are picking up from all accounts.  For all you grouse hunters, looks like a great year ahead.  Everyone of our guest out and about are seeing lots of grouse, looks like they wintered well.  See you guys in  September.

water is warming up

by dave 5/20/2008 3:30:00 AM

Fishing has picked up quite a bit.  The bite is really heating up, along with the water.  Although area trout lakes are cold, shallow walleye lake are finally reaching surface temps of 50 degrees.  The boys from Muskeego Wis. took a break from walleye fishing on Monday and hammered some really nice trout.  8 guys caught over 20 trout in a few hours, fishing shallow 15ft, with cut sucker meat.  Water temps on trout lakes were only 39 degrees.  We had the Robinsons have a great walleye day with great numbers and several fish over 20 inches, the biggest 24 inches.  Triple D, or Santa as some call him put a hurt'n on Richard Gerths and son.  Started the day on Pickerel Lake with a 24 1/2 inch walleye which won the money for first and biggest.  I am going to sneek out alittle later and try and catch a few walleyes on Fleet lake.  Those of you who are coming up in the next few weeks will hit the walleyes perfect.  Fishing slow with a jig and minnow has been the needed technique.  No suprise there.  The suckers are filling the creeks right now which leads us to believe the walleye spawn is coming to an end.  Get ready to catch the males in shallow water,  some females will be heading deep to rest now.  Fisherman will get lucky this week and find a big female hanging around but for the most part she and her friends will be on the mend.  Take care and I'll let you know how Fleet was today.

Opening weekend for walleyes

by dave 5/18/2008 4:43:00 AM

Welcome to Pickerelcreekcampblog.com.  I am going to try and give updates biweekly on conditions and results of fishing and hunting parties here at Pickerel Creek Camp as well as other local information from the Perrault falls Ont. area.  Opening day was yesturday with some nasty weather and cold water temps. The fisherman experienced 25 mph winds with rain, sleet, hail, and some sun.  Typical may long weekend weather.  Water levels are up across the area.  Pickerel Lake averaged about 45 degrees.  The reports from local lakes were mostly slow.  Notherns, walleyes, and suckers  still have spawn.  Spring seems to be 3 weeks late this year.  The upcoming week should have temps into the 60 's which should help in heating up the water.  Most of the area lakes now are ice free, With a few exceptions further north.  Even with slower fishing and bad weather most boats yielded 10 to 15 walleyes on opening day, with higher hopes today.  The local trout lakes have been producing some really nice trout.  John ludwig (Milwaukee, Wis)caught two trout on friday over 6 pounds.  Don Robison (Rochester MN ) Caught 6 walleyes 21- 22 inches at Pickerel lk. interestingly all males.  We are looking forward to a great year and bear with me on this blog, as many of you know I am not the computer guru.  I am looking forward in talking about the fishing and big game hunting  in this area and hope we get alot of participation.

Thanks for reading
